Head Counselor Christina Zier, a student at Marian College, has learned how rewarding youth work can be. “One of the great things about working with youth is that I can almost always have a smile on my face,” said Zier, “Children have this way of making me smile every moment. It can be from something as small as a child smiling or laughing to a child reaching outside their comfort zone and having fun.”
Zier has worked several years at Flanner house. Allen says that Zier’s patience and care, has helped make camp a better experience for each child in her care. “Christina is more than successful at providing a warm, secure and caring atmosphere.”
Zier knows just how important creating a team atmosphere can be. “I have learned that I may not always be able to make a difference by myself in a child’s life,” said Zier. “One of my coworkers is very intuitive with children. The campers loved her and she was able to still maintain control of her group. She was a great influence on me and how I interact with the children.”
Flanner House of Indianapolis supports the community on the near Northwest side of Indianapolis by providing early childhood education, senior services, employment skills and social services that will empower families and individuals to move from instability to self sufficiency.
