Intern at Indiana Dyslexia Institute’s Camp Delafield
Through her work at Camp Delafield, award winner Alexandria Stewart, a 2009 Brebeuf graduate and freshman at Marquette University, has learned that summer camp’s lessons are for everyone, both young and old. “Being around the kids helps me to remember to appreciate the simple things in life,” Stewart said. “I consider myself lucky to have the opportunity to help youth develop values and decide what the right choices are for each individual. Reinforcing these values and choices with the youth helps me remember to apply them in aspects of my own life.”
As the new Camp Director, Kristin Baxter was thrilled to have someone like Alex on her team. “I was not sure what responsibilities Alex would have to take on,” said Baxter, “but, by the end of the summer, I was referring to her as my right hand!”
Stewart’s flexibility allowed her to handle challenges with ease. When one of the counselors was sick for the week, Stewart stepped in to fill his shoes. “Camp continued as usual,” recounted Baxter, “ and most importantly, the campers felt at ease.”
Established in 1990, Camp Delafield was the first program conducted by the Dyslexia Institute of Indiana. Camp Delafield provides both a rigorous academic program and a diverse arts and recreational program with learning opportunities to strengthen organization, gross and fine motor skills.
