Aamber Shake

Small Group Program Coordinator at LeGore Boys & Girls Club
Award winner and LeGore Boys & Girls Club Small Program Coordinator, Aamber Shake, a senior at Ben Davis High School, gained a new perspective about life. “Working with children has influenced my goals and values in life,” said Shake. “They influenced me to take chances, grasp every opportunity that comes my way. Seeing the children smile is what reminds me that I can a difference.”
Aamber has been working at the Legore Boys & Girls club for over three years. She started working there because she wanted to like that the staff that had done so much for her when she was a youth member. “Many youth don’t want to learn on their summer vacation, but places such as the Boys & Girls club give youth the opportunity to gain knowledge in a fun way,” said Aamber.
In addition, camps offer youth a safe and nurturing environment, an environment that many of the children do no have at home. “They have a place where they can forget about whatever happened at home and they can just be a kid. The children walk into our doors,” said Aamber, “and will find at least on staff that they can talk to and trust. It is so important for children to have somebody that cares about them and will just listen to what they have to say.”
Juan Ongay, Legore Boys & Girls Club Unit Director, said that Aamber has great rapport with the kids, “She demanded respect by giving it, she listened to the children and showed compassion and understanding but also enforced the rules and help the youth accountable for their actions."
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Indianapolis believe that every young person deserves to live a life filled with hope and opportunity. Because we care about our young people, we provide a safe, educational and positive atmosphere where they can prosper and reach their full potential.
