Camp Counselor at Flanner House
Award winner and single mom Laquita Pickett knows how important a college diploma is to the wellbeing of her family, and, after taking a year off of school, will be attending Indiana State University this fall. As a Camp Counselor at Flanner House this summer, Pickett believes that her work at Flanner House has planted the seed of hope in the lives of others. She hopes to nurture that same seed in her own life and the life of her daughter.
“For me, serving youth was challenging in a positive way,” said Pickett. “It was a thrill to overhear conversations the children were having as they discussed things they had learned from me. I look forward to new opportunities to provide this valuable service to other children.
“Her creative ideas for activities had her campers enthusiastic and excited about being at camp,” said Marlo Allen, Child Development Center Director at Flanner House. “She was a positive influence on the campers as well as the other staff members. Because of Laquita’s modeling of effective communication with campers, several other staff members began to have better rapport with the children.”
Flanner House of Indianapolis supports the community on the near Northwest side of Indianapolis by providing early childhood education, senior services, employment skills and social services that will empower families and individuals to move from instability to self sufficiency.
