Counselor at CYO Camp Rancho Framasa
Through her work at CYO Camp Rancho Framasa, award winner Kathleen Flannery, a senior at University of Southern Indiana, has learned the value of a child’s perspective. “I have come to recognize how important it is to value the simple things in life,” says Flannery, “as a child does. Campers have shown me the joy of sliding down a rain soaked hill and laughing at simple corny jokes. I hope to try and look at life with a child’s wonderment.”
Steve Connaughton, Summer Program Director at CYO Camp Rancho Framasa, was impressed with Flannery’s ability to be a role model for both campers and staff alike. “Campers are often drawn to Kathleen because of her tender approach,” says Connaughton. “She facilitates with kindness, yet has the ability to stretch campers beyond what they think they are capable.
"She is a strong presence and mentor for other counselors in the cabin because she is kind in her interactions and sees each child as a unique individual,” Connaughton adds.
Nestled in the beautiful hills of Brown County, Indiana, Camp Rancho Framasa is owned by the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and operated by the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO). Established in 1946, CYO Camp Rancho Framasa is an inclusive, residential summer camp and Outdoor Ministry Center. The camp's mission is to enhance the emotional and spiritual development of youth and adults through experiences in the outdoors.
