Program Coordinator at East 10th United Methodist Youth Center
Award winner Danny Engelhardt, a senior at Butler University, has learned to better appreciate youth workers through his work at East United Tenth United Methodist Children & Youth Center. “The field of youth work isn’t easy. It requires more patience than any other field I can think of, but then is also the most rewarding,” he said. “Having summer camps that are led by young adults can really help the kids see great examples of how to live their lives.”
While walking with the campers one day, Engelhardt pointed to a flower and explained what it needed to grown. The group talked about what children needed to grow, deciding that one of the most important things for kids is love. Realizing that not all kids have the best home life, Engelhardt knows that summer camp is an important place for them to learn and thrive. “I have learned how important it is for me to do my best and work as hard as I can to make sure that when the kids are here, they are having the best time possible,” he said.
“Danny loves. This may be the truest statement I have ever made,” says Mike Bachman, Center Director at East 10th United Methodist Children & Youth Center. “His heart cannot be outmatched when it comes to the children he serves.”
East Tenth United Methodist Children and Youth Center is located on East 10th Street in Indianapolis.
