Professional Development Online

How can online tools support your professional goals?

The web is crowded with a variety of simple and free (or low-cost) tools for developing your skills, increasing your knowledge and expanding your professional network. Used correctly, web-based resources can be one of your greatest allies for advancing your career in the youth development and nonprofit field.

Using online tools can help you:

  • Access training beyond our local, state and national borders.
  • Build your network with local colleagues, national leaders in the field and important community stakeholders.
  • Share information about your successes and knowledge, building others’ knowledge and increasing collaboration within the youth development field.
Best Practices
  • Research online learning opportunities just as you would research in-person opportunities. Weigh the value of your time and any potential fees with the potential value of what you’ll learn.
  • Take time to prepare for online professional networking just as you would for an in-person networking event. If there are people you’d like to meet, be ready to introduce yourself authentically.
  • The more you offer of your own experience, the more you will often get in return. Remember that your online presence is a reflection of you – your values, your commitment to quality work, your ability to collaborate and your skills. Unlike verbal missteps, online blunders live on for a long time.
