PRESS RELEASE: Business & Community Leaders to Share Insight on How Community Can Champion Youth

Indianapolis, IN— MCCOY announced its line-up of breakout presenters for Central Indiana’s Summit for Student Success: Bringing the Community Together to Tackle the Dropout Challenge, which will be held at Hilbert Circle Theatre in downtown Indianapolis on Monday, August 10, 2009. Presenters include Nick Weber, Deputy Mayor of Indianapolis, Rick Fuson, Executive Senior VP for Pacers Sports & Entertainment, Dr. Jackie Greenwood, Director of Secondary Schools for IPS, Bill Corley, President & CEO of Community Health Network and David Harris, President & CEO of the Mind Trust.

The Summit includes five sessions in three focus areas – outcomes, sectors and partnerships. These informative, inspirational and thought-provoking sessions will feature high-quality existing programs, partnerships, initiatives and practices – within ALL sectors– contributing to a supportive environment and positive outcomes for youth and families.

OUTCOMES Breakout Sessions: Local organizations doing quality work will share their insight in one of five Quality Counts youth outcome areas – learning, working, thriving, connecting and leading.
  • Transforming Schools through New Tech and Early College Models presented by Lynn Lupold and Adam Lowe, University of Indianapolis – CELL
  • Youth & Adult Partnerships: Power, Passion & Style presented by Annie Smith, Demetrees Hutchins, Megan Schuman and Nicholas Abney, United Way of Central Indiana’s Youth As Resources
  • Communities Designed with Healthy Kids in Mind presented by Kim Irwin, Alliance for Health Promotion and Health by Design Coalition, and Gil Liu, IU School of Medicine
  • Connect for Success: Caring Adults Make a Difference presented by Eric Saunders and Raymond Riddle, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana
  • Hype It Up and Break It Down: How to Get Kids Excited About College & Career presented by Doug Brown and Brent Washington, Boy Scouts of America; Darin Ramsey, Butler University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences; Kendy Smith, Lilly & Co.; and Tiffany Powell, Center for Leadership Development. Moderated by Jay Geshay, United Way of Central Indiana

SECTORS Breakout Sessions: Leaders from each sector who have made commitments to youth development will share the details of those commitments, why they made them and what impact they’re making on student success.
  • Bridging the Digital & Generational Divide presented by Dr. Jackie Greenwood, IPS Schools, and Don Kent and Daniel Kent, Net Literacy
  • Of the Youth, By the Youth, For the Youth: Empowering Young People Within Your Organization presented by Nicolette Jones and Ida Ratcliff, Goodwill Industries of Central Indiana
  • Parents Speak Out for Keeping Kids in School: Fishbowl Session presented by Jackie Garvey and Angela Short, Indiana Partnership Center, and Mashariki Jywanza, Bridges to Success, IPS
  • Corporate Citizens as Champions for Youth panelists include Bill Corley, Community Health Network; Rick Fuson, Pacers Sports & Entertainment; Ed Perez, Indiana State Farm; and Eric Dickerson, Allison Transmission
  • Mayor-Sponsored Initiatives and the Educational Landscape of Central Indiana presented by Nick Weber and M. Karega Rausch, Office of Mayor Greg Ballard; Scott Bess, Goodwill Education Initiatives; and Janet McNeal, Herron High School

  • One Community's Answer to Achievement & Recovery presented by Jim Grim, George Washington Community High School, and Monica Medina, IU
  • Education Entrepreneurship in Indianapolis presented by David Harris, The Mind Trust; Thomas Major, Indianapolis Private Industry Council; Earl Martin Phalen, Summer Advantage USA; and Staci Rich, MSD Lawrence Township
  • Excellence in African American Male Programming: Identifying the Success Indicators presented by Khaula Murtadha, IUPUI; Steve Ingram, African American Male Equity Project; and Timberly Baker, IUPUI
  • Beyond the School Day: Inspiring Learning & Achievement presented by David Klinkose, Indiana Afterschool Network and Afterschool Coalition of Indianapolis; Nicole Rowan, Urban Mission YMCA; and Judy Fraps, MSD Washington Township.
The Summit offers the community a chance to build partnerships, gain commitment and adopt an actionable plan for creating an environment full of opportunities for youth to thrive, learn, engage and contribute. Keynote speakers include Tarik Glenn, former Colts offensive tackle and Founder of D.R.E.A.M. Alive, Dr. Tony Bennett, Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Indiana, and Karen Pittman, Executive Director of the Forum for Youth Investment in Washington, DC.

The cost to attend is $30 for general registrants, $25 for non-profit professionals and FREE for young people and students. Registrants will receive a $5 discount when they pledge to bring a backpack for the United Way of Central Indiana’s BackPack Attack campaign. The conference will take place from 7:30am to 4pm.
